The Lost City Trek (Ciudad Perdida): Complete Guide
Everything you need to know about the Lost City Trek in Colombia — the route, difficulty, what to pack and how to book this unforgettable jungle adventure.

The Lost City Trek (Ciudad Perdida) is one of South America's great adventures: a multi-day hike through the jungle of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta to an ancient city older than Machu Picchu.
What it is
Ciudad Perdida ("Teyuna") was built by the Tayrona people around 800 AD. Reaching it means hiking 4 to 6 days through rainforest, river crossings and indigenous territory, ending with the climb up 1,200 stone steps to the terraces.
Difficulty
- Moderate to challenging: hot, humid, muddy and hilly.
- You carry a day pack; meals and hammocks/camps are provided by the tour.
- You need a reasonable level of fitness, but no technical climbing.
How to book
- The trek can only be done with authorized tour operators — independent hiking isn't allowed.
- Tours start from Santa Marta; all leave the same trail, so choose a reputable operator.
- Book ahead in high season (December–March).
What to pack
- Lightweight, quick-dry clothes, a rain layer and good hiking shoes
- Insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat and a headlamp
- A small quick-dry towel, swimwear (river swims) and a dry bag
- Only essentials — you carry your own day pack
