Whale Watching in Colombia: Pacific Coast Guide
When and where to see humpback whales in Colombia — the Pacific coast season, best spots and what to expect.

Every year, humpback whales travel thousands of kilometers to breed and give birth in the warm waters of Colombia's Pacific coast — one of the world's great wildlife spectacles.
When to go
The season runs roughly from July to October, when humpback whales gather along the Pacific. This is the best (and only) window to see them.
Where to see them
The Pacific coast of the Chocó department is the prime region:
- Nuquí and Bahía Solano — remote, beautiful and the classic whale-watching bases.
- Málaga Bay (Bahía Málaga) near Buenaventura — accessible from the Valle del Cauca (Cali) region.
What to expect
- Boat trips to see whales breaching and spouting, often with calves.
- Dramatic, lush coastline where jungle meets the ocean.
- Birdlife, waterfalls and quiet beaches.
Tips
- Book with responsible operators that keep a safe distance from the whales.
- The Pacific is rainy and remote — pack accordingly and go with a plan.
- Combine it with beach and nature time on the coast.
